Vladislav Surkov: An Introduction

If you don’t already know Vladislav Surkov, he described himself as “the author, or one of the authors, of the new Russian system.” He “has directed Russian society like one great reality show.” Sound familiar?

While much remains uncertain (i.e. classified, redacted, and shrouded allegations of conspiracy and disinformation), it would be wise to remember that political technicians like Surkov (or Kellyanne Conaway) intentionally invoke postmodern ideas of the breakdown of absolute truths to create new narratives of the past and the present, encouraging people to rely on their own judgement as to which “facts” are real.

Surkov’s version of political pragmatism in relations with ‘the West’ helped relocate anti-Western conspiracy theories from the margins of Russian political discourse to its centre.”
